-Popped over to Greece for a cheeky road trip ‘round the Peloponnese with my girlfriend Evelyn.

-It wasn’t a birding trip, but I managed to sneak in a satisfying amount of vitamin B, using my ‘travel gear’ (Awesome Nikon Travelites and less awesome beat-up Lumix bridge camera).

-Was nice to be in ‘Collins Bird Guide’ territory again (best field guide ever).

-Had a rough idea about what to find in Greece, but found quite a few fun surprises based on my patchy knowledge of what October looks like in the Peloponnese hills.

October 12

-Saw Tuxedo Crows (Magpies) at the airport, and from the road in most spots.

-Outside of Nafplio, in the highlands of Lefkakia, birds heard but not seen included Rose Parakeet (introduced), and Penduline Tit.

-Eurofinches were out in force (Hawfinch, Chaffinch, European Goldfinch).

-Other European ‘regulars’ seen at Lefkakia included European Robins (everywhere at all times throughout the trip), European Collared Dove, Common Blackbird, Eurasian Blackcap, Jackdaw, Spotted Flycatcher, Great Tit, Eurasian Jay, and House Sparrow.

-Heard a Tawny Owl kewicking in the jetlag doldrums at 1:49am on the first night.

-Swifts spotted over the distant hills at dusk, I’m guessing Pallid Swifts heading south.

-There are stray dogs and cats everywhere in Greece. Our rental car was quickly transformed into a dog feeding pit crew, as we screeched over to the shoulder every time we saw stray dogs. Just a blip in the bucket, but it made us feel like we were doing something about it, instead of driving past.

October 13

-In Lefkakia at dawn, Tree Pipit, Song Thrush, Wood Warbler, and Cirl Bunting heard. A shimmering flock of Serin moved through the olive trees, with Barn Swallows overhead.

-At the top of Palamidi Castle in Nafplio, it took me a few moments to figure out Western Rock Nuthatch (an energetic species of rocky mountain heights). Grey Wagtails in town, and Yellow-legged Gulls in the harbour.

-Towards dusk at Mycenae, more Western Rock Nuthatch (better looks), as well as Chaffinch, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Common Raven, more distant Swifts, Wood Warbler, Common Buzzard, and Spotted Flycatcher.
